MetaMask is a self-custodial crypto wallet that manages the keys used to access your assets and approve blockchain transactions. It supports Ethereum and other EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine, the execution environment used by Ethereum-compatible networks) networks alongside native Bitcoin, Solana and TRON accounts. A compatible dApp can request a connection and propose an action; you review the request in MetaMask.
Free base access: installing and using the software wallet does not require a subscription or a hardware purchase. Optional swaps, bridges, purchases and other services can charge separately. Sending funds can also require a blockchain network fee; a deposit does not remove the sender’s network or withdrawal costs.
One wallet, different network addresses
MetaMask groups addresses from different networks under an account. An Ethereum address is not your Bitcoin or Solana receiving address. This makes the wallet useful for people who move between EVM applications and native SOL or BTC transfers, provided they select the correct network and address for each action.
Swaps gathers quotes for supported token exchanges and transfers between networks. Available routes depend on the assets and networks selected. The companion MetaMask Portfolio web dashboard brings supported account balances together; its network coverage is separate from the wallet's.
What you need to set up
The wallet runs as a browser extension or an iOS or Android app. Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge are documented installation options. The Web platform listed here refers to the Portfolio companion. The listed interface languages are verified for the extension; mobile language availability can differ.
- Account: wallet setup is required. Linking a Google or Apple account is optional; the recovery-phrase setup does not require a social account.
- Existing wallet: not required. MetaMask can create a new wallet or import a compatible one.
- Recovery: access depends on your recovery phrase or the credentials for your chosen sign-in method. MetaMask support cannot restore missing credentials for you.
Costs and practical limits
The wallet software is free to download. MetaMask Swaps lists a 0.875% service fee, separate from network costs. Buying crypto through integrated providers includes a 1% MetaMask fee, provider charges and applicable network fees. These charges apply to optional services, not a wallet subscription. Review the displayed quote for the action you choose.
MetaMask is less suited to workflows that require every network feature to work identically. Bitcoin account imports currently require Native SegWit compatibility. Solana does not allow a custom RPC (the connection used by the wallet to query a network and submit transactions) provider. Payment-provider availability depends on your region, and a supported network does not guarantee a swap route for every token.
