Staking helps secure proof-of-stake networks by assigning tokens to validators or protocols. Depending on the network, users may delegate natively, run infrastructure, join a pool, stake through an exchange, or receive a liquid staking token. Choose a staking method deliberately
- • Control: Know whether you delegate, transfer custody, or receive another token.
- • Access: Check activation, unbonding, withdrawal queues, and minimums.
- • Validator: Review performance, commission, concentration, and slashing.
Separate network rewards from advertised rates
Returns depend on issuance, transaction fees, validator performance, commission, participation rate, and protocol incentives. Compare whether the displayed rate is gross or net, how often rewards accrue, whether they compound automatically, and which fees apply. Rates are variable and token-denominated returns can lose value in fiat terms.
Review access and validator risk
Check minimum amounts, activation and unstaking periods, withdrawal queues, validator uptime, commission changes, and slashing rules. Delegation usually does not transfer ownership, but custodial staking does. Operating a validator adds hardware, security, and maintenance responsibilities.
Understand liquid staking tokens
A liquid staking token represents a claim on staked assets and may be used in DeFi. Its market price can diverge from redemption value, and integrations add smart-contract and liquidity risk. Compare issuer controls, validator distribution, redemption mechanism, audits, and how rewards appear in the token value or balance.
